Thomas Friedman: We’re opening the lids on two giant Pandora’s boxes

Merriam-Webster notes that a “Pandora’s box” can be “anything that looks ordinary but may produce unpredictable harmful results.” I’ve been thinking a lot about Pandora’s boxes lately, because we Homo sapiens are doing something we’ve never done before: lifting the lids on two giant Pandora’s boxes at the same time, without any idea of what could come flying out.One of these Pandora’s boxes is labeled “artificial intelligence,” and it is exemplified by the likes of ChatGPT, Bard and AlphaFold, which testify to humanity’s ability for the first time to manufacture something in a godlike way that approaches general intelligence, far exceeding the brainpower with which we evolved naturally. The other Pandora’s box is labeled “climate change,” and with it we humans are for the first time driving ourselves in a godlike way from one climate epoch into another. Up to now, that power was largely confined to natural forces involving Earth’s orbit around the sun.For me the big question, as we l...

Pac-12 media rights negotiations: Why the delay? Washington State president Kirk Schulz offers an explanation

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:07:22 GMT

Details of the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations have been hidden from view for the better part of 10 months, with no issue more mysterious than the extended time frame. Even a handful of university presidents expected the process to have wrapped up earlier this spring. Now, it appears the saga could last into the summer. Why the delay? One of those very same presidents has offered crucial insight.“I think it’s just the environment,” Washington State’s Kirk Schulz said this week. “It’s the uncertainty in the economy, the layoffs in the tech sector and other places.“I know at least one of the partners we were talking to said, ‘We’re ready to sign today, but the optics of us announcing that we’re laying off X number of people and we signed a multimillion-dollar deal with the Pac-12 are just not the best, so we’re going to have to wait six weeks.’“Clearly, the optics are something those folks are really worried about.”Sch...

There are safety concerns at the site of a deadly blast in Newburyport, where Jack O’Keefe has been identified as the person who died in the explosion early Thursday morning.Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the explosion at the chemical plant where four other workers were hurt. Crews say there’s no danger to the community, but there are still concerns about the site itself.“The concern of the workers today is still an inhalation hazard, and it’s still a fire hazard because it’s all highly flammable material,” Newburyport Fire Department Chief Barry Salt said. The same location was also the site of an explosion in 2020 and a chemical fire in 2021.
